1 ) Fantastic Four #24 - Written by Ryan North, art by Carlos Gomez, colors by Jesus Aburtov, edited by Tom Brevoort
Love the series, always have, but let's get to the Thing in the room. Is Alex Ross out for the next issue? Or is it just the annual? He has been CRUSHING these covers, they are probably his best right now, so it would be a real shame to lose him, that Doctor Doom T-Rex will hang on my wall forever. This run has been the stuff of sci fi legend, each issue deals with a unique scientific problem for Reed and company to solve, and this issue is no different. It's a conclusion to a two issue story, and it finishes it well. Zrixa is an excellent one shot villain, and the bonus at the end introduces what I hope is a great addition to the cast. North has not even begun to run out of steam, so let this man keep going for as long as he can. Gomez and Aburtov do their job well, especially with the frame of Zrixa and Reed staring out into nothingness. This team is strong, and not a single issue has disappointed, so go get that TPB and catch up if you want some sci fi superhero action!
2 ) X-Men #3 - Written by Jed Mackay, art by Ryan Stegman, ink by JP Mayer and Livesay, colors by Marte Gracia
Even though I'm still not sold on the team (looking at you Kid Omega), I'm sold on Cyclops. He definitely looked/acted a bit older in this issue, and had some pretty badass lines. Scott Summers vs. the United States needs to become a book. Beast's look is still taking some getting used to, but I love the designs for Temper, Magneto, and Juggernaut. Temper's full page was excellent, I don't even like Temper but that panel did it for me, very well done by Stegman and company. The only thing that threw me was the bit at the end with what looked like Cyclops having a panic attack. He LED this issue, and finally looks back to vintage Scott Summer form. So I'm hoping this isn't leading to a "Cyclops has panic attacks" arc, the dude went in front of a celestial and was like "You are nothing to me." I appreciate a good mental health story, but Scott has had his trials, let him have his triumph for once without a hot psychic or other force messing it up. Either way the first three issues of this new series have been very good, Mackay and team should get a good run out of this and it's worth reading!
3 ) Captain America #12 - Story by J. Michael Straczynski, art from Jesus Saiz, colors by Matt Hollingsworth
What a weird Captain America story. It's so weird, that it totally works. Cap is still working for God/Life, and Death has arrived on Earth to stop him. The highlight of the issue is Death's monologue. It's chilling, and is an excellent explanation as to why Death has decided life must end: humans. That simple. Captain America stories rarely venture into the supernatural, but Stracynski is water boarding us with it, and it's working. The side characters are interesting, the main villain was a penguin, and the art from Saiz and Hollingsworth is stunning, especially that penguin. This is still very much a series to pick up!
